Bettws Rugby Club Raises Money for The Lymphoma Charity

Saturday 4th December and fourteen brave walkers dressed in various fancy dress costumes met at Caerphilly Castle to walk the 15 miles to the Bettws Rugby Club in aid of The Lymphoma Charity and in remembrance of David Murphy who died from the illness three years earlier.

The walkers were backed up by David Sheppard ably helped by Alisha Lawrence, Georgia Murphy and Wendy Cripps in the rescue vehicles with Shaun McGuire for video and photography of the event.

The weather had turned kinder to the walkers as the air temperature had increased compared to the previous week and the walk was helped by the fact that at least one pavement on the roads had been cleared of snow and ice, at least until they reached Bedwas when at times some of the pavements had not been cleared making the walk hazardous.

It was at Bedwas that the rain started and stayed for most of the way until they reached Newport.

The walkers were encouraged by the many drivers who had heard of the walk from Real Radio, Red Dragon and Newport City Radio sounding their horns as they passed and in many cases stopped and made donation including a number of £10 notes. Even a police car used its Blues and Twos in encouragement and other persons who the group passed also made donations.

Collections were made at a number of hostelries and the group would like to thank them and their customers for their support.

Finally the group made the rugby club although a little wet and tired and some limping but thoroughly pleased with their endeavours and money raised.

The walkers were Andrew, Carl, Richard and Robert Murphy, Claire Pepper, Ray and Ashley Cripps, Paul and Steven Murphy, Gemma, Sophie and Stephen Lawrence, Zara Travers and Craig Ash.
