Review of the Development, Activities and
Achievements of the Association
Bettws in Bloom has once
again gained tremendous success this year. The tenth anniversary
of the Bloom has been reached and the film of the Bloom's
activities The Impossible Dream (a year in the life
of the Bloom) has been completed after eighteen months
work.
The documentary has been
shown publicly at The Riverfront and copies sent
all over the UK to various charities. It has also been entered
in British Film Institute competitions. It has been highly
acclaimed and copies are being made for the community.
Bettws in Bloom came first
in Newport in Bloom for the best community gardens and it
came first in the Best Wildlife and Conservation Area in
that competition.
Bettws in Bloom came first
for the third year running in the Wales in Bloom competition
for the Best Environmental Projects and Conservation and
Neighbourhood Projects. The awards were presented at Caerphilly
Castle where all authorities in Wales were represented.
The Bloom was the only association that has won first place
in three consecutive years. Classes have increased and we
had a highly successful Memorial Service on September 11th.
There was also a very successful carnival day with a Chinese
Dragon Theme with over 1,000 people taking part; and
a highly successful Lantern Parade and Christmas Carol
Service for the community.
Because of our success we
are now competing in the Champion of Champions awards
in Wales in Bloom, and in Newport for Wales Conservation
Awards this year. We are hoping to build an Environmental
Geosymmetrical Dome with the help of the Community to promote
conservation related to climate change this summer.
Planning permission has been
granted for another six years with the assurance that the
authority will approve a permanency now that we are established
The Trustees are going for further grants and more improvements
are on the agenda. The Bettws in Bloom Art Group have been
very successful winning eleven out of twelve prizes in the
Newport in Bloom competition. They have had their own art
exhibitions and are entered in the Wales in Bloom competition
next year. Many conferences, seminars and groups have used
our facilities and we are hoping to have further success
in the next interim period.
